Johannes III, Bishop of Pachoras
X/XI Centuries
John III's tenure as bishop of Faras
overlaps with that of
Peter I, suggesting some kind of schism in the
Nubian church.
He was a contemporary of the Egyptian ruler al-Aziz,
who was happily married to a Greek and under her influence
advanced the "melchite" (Eastern/Chalcedonian) Orthodox
cause throughout the Near East.
Because of this, some (but not all) modern scholars believe that
John was
Eastern Orthodox, as opposed to miaphysite, as were his disciples
and successors in the next generation,
Marianus and
Mercurius.
Control of the see thereafter oscillated between melchites
and miaphysites until the cathedral was abandoned around 1200.
Under construction --- far from complete! Read with caution.
