Worcester, England
Old English WEOGORNACEASTER
Obscure in Roman times, Worcester was made the seat of a
diocese for the Hwicce people by St. Theodore of Tarsus.
The anti-Norman insurgency after 1066 drew much of its
strength from the Worcester area, a circumstance which
determined the course of the diificult, even
tragic, career of Wulfstan,
the city's
last Orthodox bishop of the pre-modern era.
