The Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem
Destroyed by the Babylonians; rebuilt; again destroyed
by the Romans. There were apparently once other Jewish
"temples" as well, both in Palestine (e.g. at
Arad) and at
Elephantine in Egypt; their relation to the main Temple is unclear.
After the building of the Second Temple, however,
these local temples ceased to exist. The
Samaritans had a Temple of their own on
Mt. Gerezim.
