The Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem

Destroyed by the Babylonians; rebuilt; again destroyed by the Romans. There were apparently once other Jewish "temples" as well, both in Palestine (e.g. at Arad) and at Elephantine in Egypt; their relation to the main Temple is unclear. After the building of the Second Temple, however, these local temples ceased to exist. The Samaritans had a Temple of their own on Mt. Gerezim.

Bruce Chilton: The Temple in Jerusalem and the Sacrifice of Jesus. (Read with caution.) A distinguished scholar's interesting attempt to understand Jesus' attitude toward the liturgical worship in the Temple. While an Orthodox reader will reject the claim that Jesus was primarily interested in reforming the laws of ritual purity, it seems entirely possible that the Temple authorities and Judas Iscariot, as Chilton argues, perceived Him in such a light. --- Bard College
