Stephen II, Pope of Rome
VIII Century
Pope for two days, Stephen was elected to the papal throne in 752 and
died of a stroke before he was consecrated pope. Nothing is known
of his life or career. If one considers election to the papacy
sufficient, he is considered a pope. If one considers consecration
necessary, he is not a pope. The Roman church dropped his name
from the list of legitimate popes in 1961.
