St. Sexburgha
VII Century
The older sister of St. Etheldreda, Sexburgha (d. c. 699)
established the
female monastery at Minster-en-Sheppey, whose community she joined after
the death of her husband, King Erconbert of Kent. in 664. Her daughter
Erengilda was the abbess of Sheppey, and Bede notes that her
other
daughter Ermengota had visions. Sexburgha succeeded her sister as abbess
of Ely in 679 and oversaw the translation of
Etheldreda' s
incorrupt
relics to the cathedral at Ely.
