St. Scholastica
V/VI Centuries
Sister and possibly twin of Benedict of Nursia, St. Scholastica (c. 480-c.
543) is said to have been dedicated to Gpd while she was an infant. She is
accounted the first Benedictine nun and established a female monastery at
Plombariola. Its location is not known, and it is believed to have been
near Monte Cassino. Gregory the Great
tells in his Dialogues about her
death three days after she had prayed for a violent storm to keep Benedict
with her in spiritual conversation. She was buried in the tomb her brother
had prepared for himself, and the two are, traditionally, said to have
been buried together.
