Salzburg
(Latin JUVAVIA)
Ancient ecclesiastical center of both
Austria and
Bavaria,
established as such by Sts. Rupert
and Erendruda early in the VIII Century.
It was originally a part of the Celtic Church,
and was the see of the famous Orthodox Irish saint
Virgil O'Neal.
Later brought more closely into the Frankish-Roman
orbit, the city unfortunately became the headquarters of a
powerful and worldly church establishment which
anticipated many post-Schism developments in the
West and notoriously opposed the work of
Sts. Cyril and Methodius.
