Romanus I, Pope of Rome
IX Century
A pope about whom little is known, Romanus was born near Rome in Civita
Castellum and was cardinal priest at St. Peter-in-Chains when elected to
the papacy in August, 897. He reburied Formosus and revalidated his
ordinations. Romanus was deposed in November, 897 and may have served as a
monk from then until his death.
