The Church of the Theotokos of Petrich, and Assen's Castle


A major Bulgarian fortress dating in part to pre-Christian Thrace, Assenova Krepost takes its modern name from Emperor John Asen II, who rebuilt the ancient complex in the XIII Century. Although the secular buildings are mostly gone, the beautiful mediæval church is still preserved.
