St. Symeon Pentaglossus
X/XI Centuries
Multilingual (hence "Pentaglossus")
Sicilian Greek monk at
St. Catherine's
Monastery in the Sinai. In the early
XI Century, perhaps in the context of
one of the monastery's ambitious fund-raising
projects, he conveyed some relics of
St. Catherine
of Alexandria to France, an event
which swiftly catalysed the spread
of fervent devotion to that saint everwhere
in the Mediæval West.
