Bishop Joasaph Bolotov of Alaska
Russian IOASAF
XVIII Century
Archimandrite Joasaph was the
leader of the delegation of Valaam missionary
monks
(including Sts. Herman
and Juvenaly)
sent to Alaska in 1793. Appalled by
the settlers' treatment of the Aleuts,
he reported the abuse to the
authorities, but to little avail.
He was later consecrated first bishop of Alaska,
but on the return trip in 1799 his ship, the Phoenix, was lost at
sea.
He is considered a saint by many Orthodox.
