John XIX, Pope of Rome
XI Century
Brother of Benedict VIII, John was born Romanus and was a layman at the
time of his election in 1024. On the day of his consecration, he rose
rapidly through the clerical ranks. In 1027, he crowned Conrad II Holy
Roman Emperor and is supposed to have considered recognizing the primacy
of the see of Constantinople for a tidy sum. Outraged Roman clergy quickly
put an end to that idea. John died in 1032/33.
