Gallicanism

The attempts of the Church of France to maintain its independence from, or in some periods its lordship over, the papacy have often been justified with the language of Orthodox autocephaly. In modern times, a number of Gallicans have converted to Eastern Orthodoxy, and when an autocephalous French Orthodox Church finally emerges, it will no doubt count some of the Gallicans among its forerunners.
