St. Frithestan, Bishop of Winchester
IX/X Centuries
According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, St. Frithestan
became bishop of Winchester
in 909. He reposed in 933, as also noted in the Chronicle,
having retired two years earlier. His beautiful stole
and maniple (signed by the needle-worker Ælflæd) were
at some point placed on the relics of St. Cuthbert and may
still be viewed today.
