The American Missionary Diocese
XVIII/XX Centuries
By this name, we mean the pre-Revolutionary Russian Orthodox diocese
originally based in Alaska,
then in San Francisco, and finally
in New York. Most (though not all) Orthodox in
America seem to have recognised this diocese as the canonical
American church regardless of their own ethnicity. After the
Russian Revolution, the Diocese lost much of its pan-ethnic
scope (and even many of its Russian parishes); for its history
after the Revolution and development into an autocephalous
church, see the entry
on the Metropolia and OCA.
