St. Alfred the Great,
King of England
IX Century
Not only a political leader who saved his Orthodox country from
pagan Scandinavian rule, Alfred was a scholar who translated
the writings of St. Boethius
and St. Gregory Dialogos into English
and attempted to rule as a Christian prince. He also promoted
unity between Anglo-Saxons and Celts, and encouraged
Christian missions in the Danelaw. His capital city was
Winchester.
