ALEUTS

(Subgroups include UNANGA and ALUTIIQ)
A mainly Orthodox people in southern Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. The first modern Orthodox mission to America, headed by Fr. Joasaph Bolotov, was sent to the Aleuts in 1793. One of the missionaries, St. Herman of Alaska is their national enlightener and patron; St. Juvenaly and later St. Innocent also worked among them. From the US annexation of Alaska until the 1960s the Aleut culture was severely repressed and persecuted, but has somehow survived.
