St. Acacius, Bishop of Melitene
III Century
Disciple of Bishop Otreus and
designated by him as
tutor of the future St. Euthymius the
Great, Acacius went on to become
one of the most resolute opponents
of Nestorianism at the
Third Ecumenical Council.
No doubt the fact that he had been a personal
friend of
Nestorius before the latter's slide into heresy
made the situation all the more painful. Acacius
was also among the early critics of
Theodore of Mopsuestia.
